What can I do to see if the priesthood is for me?
Dear Father Anthony,
When i was very young i recall i wanted to be pope. now i am entering high school and the priest at my church reccomended seminary in the future. I am a lector and i try to recieve communion as often as possible and I have a sense of love of our lord, and his mother, the blessed virgin mary i say the rosary nightly and often read my bible. what else should i do to see if the priesthood is for me?
I am sure that by now you have grown out of wanting to be Pope! But isn't it great how God can put such desires in our hearts, not for the glory of it but out of our desire to serve him.
What you are doing is very good, and what big step you can take now depends to a certain degree on what your parents allow you to do. For example, would they allow you to go to a High School Seminary if there is one available to you with your diocese or with a religious order you know?
Supposing that High School Seminary is not a possibility for you know, you should continue to do what you are doing but I think there is one area you ought to start paying attention to that you haven't mentioned. All the very good things you are doing have to do with nourishing your personal relationship with Christ, and this is essential so don't give up on them. But Jesus also "sent out" his disciples. Why don't you ask the priest at your church about what things you can start doing for others?
You can begin by adding this dimension to your prayer life and devotions. Pray for and offer sacrifices for the persecuted Church, for those who suffer, and for your friends and relatives especially those of your own age who no longer practice their faith. As you pray for them ask Jesus to show you what you can do for them, and talk to the priest at your church about this. Maybe there are things you can help him with: bringing a Youth 2000 retreat to your parish, starting a youth inquiry group, helping out with Catholic Scouts, teaching CCD, training as Youth Missionary and doing a mission. There are lots of good Catholic things on the Web that can give you ideas. Remember, if Jesus has given you the grace of staying close to him it is because he wants to reach others through you, through your prayer and through your action.
God bless, I'll be praying for you,
